Why We Created This Plugin
WordPress’ default category screen displays all categories in a flat or slightly nested list, but when working with complex hierarchies, it becomes hard to navigate. Our main goals were to:
- Improve usability for large category hierarchies.
- Allow admins to focus only on the categories they need to see.
- Preserve familiar WordPress workflows without interfering with bulk actions or core functionality.
How It Works
Collapsible Categories Admin enhances the Categories admin screen by adding toggle arrows next to parent categories. Clicking an arrow collapses or expands its child categories, instantly reducing visual clutter.
Key features include:
- Accordion Mode – when enabled, opening a category automatically collapses its sibling categories, keeping the interface clean.
- Remember State – if enabled, the plugin remembers which categories were open or closed using your browser’s local storage, so your view stays consistent between visits.
- Expand/Collapse Buttons – dedicated buttons next to the bulk action drop down allow you to expand or collapse all categories at once.
Under the hood, the plugin works by reading the category hierarchy from WordPress (using the `level-X` classes) and dynamically showing or hiding rows in the admin table.
