I wanted to create a simple masonry gallery that builds on the standard WordPress gallery. No separate gallery system and no external libraries, just the WordPress Media Library, the native shortcode and the Gallery block. That became VJFNL Native Masonry Gallery.
The plugin places each image in the column that is currently the shortest. Images with different dimensions therefore fit together more naturally, with fewer empty spaces. Separate column counts can be configured for desktop, tablet and mobile, along with the gap between images.
The layout is recalculated when images finish loading or when the available space changes. This allows it to work inside flex and grid layouts, tabs, accordions and most page builders without relying on theme- or builder-specific class names.
The plugin also includes a lightbox. It supports buttons, keyboard arrows, the Escape key and real animated swipe gestures. Swipe navigation works on phones and tablets, as well as desktop computers with touchscreens.
Because not every gallery needs the same presentation, the plugin can scan the website for gallery shortcodes. It can also find galleries stored in ACF fields and other custom fields. Each detected gallery can have its own settings:
- Disable the lightbox.
- Remove the image links.
- Set a custom image width.
- Change the gap between images.
Each gallery has its own save button, so changing one gallery does not affect the others.
The native WordPress link=”none” setting is respected as well. When a gallery is set to “Link to: None,” the images are no longer automatically linked to their original files.
The plugin does not use external services, tracking or large gallery libraries. Everything remains inside WordPress, and the existing gallery workflow stays the same. The standard WordPress gallery simply becomes more flexible and visually interesting.
